Jeff’s Top 13 Horror Films of 2017: The Winner

1
The Devil's Candy

A struggling painter is possessed by satanic forces after he and his family move into their dream home.

There is so much about this film that stands out as a brilliantly played horror film that should not be ignored. First, there's something awesome about a guy named Ethan who can star in an independent horror film and make it his own. Ethan Hawke was my goto previously after Sinister. This time Ethan Embry walks onto the screen in The Devil’s Candy and dominates. As archetype for starving artists who live a metal lifestyle he bends the stereotype into what most people don’t realize is the true human behind the music. Any film that can take the culture of heavy music and make it more human is always a win with me. The Devil’s Candy takes everything you should love about horror and puts it on full display for you to be a part of. We have the perfect marriage of heavy metal music and horror, a demon, a serial killer, the ultimate sacrifice, and the shattering of stereotypes. Embry is a loving father that just happens to have long hair and listens to Metallica. He’s even willing to paint butterflies if it means keeping a roof over his family’s head. So that when the shit hits the fan, which you know it will, he will stop at nothing to do what is right despite his human frailties. Yes, metalheads have weaknesses, and The Devil’s Candy is most likely the greatest.
