J.P.’s Random Review: Killer Pinata (2015)

A possessed piñata, seeking to avenge the savagery that humanity has inflicted on his kind, picks off a group of friends, one by one, in an unending night of terror. (IMDB)

Director: Stephen Tramontana; Writer: Megan Macmanus; Stars: Lindsay Ashcroft, Nate Bryan, Billy Chengary

Before viewing KILLER PINATA the expectation is something similar to the brilliance that is ThanksKillling. In fact the filmmakers make sure to thank the evil Turkie in the credits. What we get is something closer to Rubber with a huge chunk of Chuckie. Sadly, our evil killer pinata does not have any nasty one liners, which I was really hoping for when the first 10 minutes brilliantly teased the possibilities. The next hour and a half that makes up the full story line contains sparse nuggets of comedy brilliance, clever kills, and quite a few “what the hell” moments. So yes, there is a killer pinata, his backstory is Chuckie like, and there are times he has some kind of special powers to turn people into puppets. Most of the kills make you wonder if there’s a message in there about candy, and a castration scene. Those are just a few of the nuggets I mentioned to look forward too without spoiling it.

Condensed down to its basic elements, KILLER PINATA would be a fantastic short film. In its entirety the acting can’t seem to keep up with the preposterous nature of the subject matter. Bit of the story seem to fluff to fill fill time while a greatest hits of all the best scenes would have been hilarious and plenty. While the little noises the pinata made were funny, I still kind of want some nasty one liners, I mean there were plenty of opportunities for it. Either that or KILLER PINATA needs to be MST3K’d.
