Jeff Reviews Insidious: The Last Key

"Brilliant parapsychologist Elise Rainier receives a disturbing phone call from a man who claims that his house is haunted. Even more disturbing is the address -- 413 Apple Tree Lane in Five Keys, N.M. -- the home where Elise grew up as a child. Accompanied by her two investigative partners, Rainier travels to Five Keys to confront and destroy her greatest fear -- the demon that she accidentally set free years earlier."

Insidious 3 is directed by Adam Robitel and written by Leigh Whannell. It is produced by Jason Blum, Oren Peli, and James Wan. It is the fourth installment in the Insidious franchise, and the second in terms of the series's in-story chronology. It stars Lin Shaye, Angus Sampson, Leigh Whannell, Spencer Locke, Caitlin Gerard, and Bruce Davison.

Insidious: The Last Key is the second prequel to the Insidious franchise in which we get to learn more about Elise's life as a psychic before she had her neck snapped in the first official film. In a way James Wan and team have found a thousand and one ways to keep Lin Shaye on our big screens despite killing her off early. It probably helps that Leigh Whannell is a member of the parasychology team. So in this one Elise takes her boys back to the home she grew up in and faces the demon that first dragged her into the psychic darkness. There are a couple interesting twists and turns that aren't expected that make it unique. But, ultimately you have another Insidious movie complete with shadow monsters, blind scares, and a demon who steals voices like in Dead Silence.

Still currently in theaters, I think I'd suggest seeing it as a second run rather than hoping for a best of 2018. Fortunately the year is still young and Wan still has more plans for us.
