On this day in horror history.... July 10th, 2015
On this day in horror history.... 'The Gallows' is released theatrically. A film that I reviewed, shortly after it's release, it added another entry into the 'found footage' genre. This one had a really solid start, but dropped the ball before the ending. It's worth a Saturday afternoon viewing, but won't be remembered as anything more than a film that tried to hard to be something it wasn't.

On this day in horror history.... as odd looking as his books might suggest, Dean Koontz is born. An author who blends horror, as well as other elements, into his stories, Dean is most famous for 'Odd Thomas', 'Watchers' and 'Demon Seed'. He may not be at the top of my list, for horror writers, but the man's got chops.
My review of ‘Gremlin’ By William S. Mayfield
We all remember Gremlins from
the 80's, Gizmo was so cute and fluffy and the Gremlins he accidentally spawned were mean but funny in a mischievous
way, now forget that movie because Ryan Bellgardts Gremlin is many things
but cute is not a word I would use to describe it. The film starts off with a
older couple terrified of a ornate box with symbols on it. The man is yelling
for the woman to be quiet as the box opens. This movie starts off with a bang
and doesn't really let up much during
the film. Fast forward maybe a day and the old man from beginning is giving
this old metal looking box to his mother. He is very upset to learn that she
has company staying with her but he still insist that he has to give this box
to a loved one and quickly leaves. The mother takes it and we are introduced to
the Thatchers. Adam and Julie, its not long till they find something wrong with
the box as death follows it closely. The story was quite original and I don't
want to give any of it away. The Thatchers daughter Anna sneaks out the first
the box is at the house to inform her boyfriend that she is pregnant and while
shes out of the house we see what happens when the box is ignored. There is so
much I want to say but I am afraid I'll
blurt some crucial detail out and I don't like giving spoilers in my reviews.
As the story unfolds we see this family go through hell and we find out they
had already had tragedy in there lives
before this story. To sum it it all up with out spoiling it, see it, there is
no other way to put it. If you are a horror fan and especially creature horror
films are your thing then give Gremlin a watch. Great actors and awesome special
effects. I give Gremlin a solid 8 out of 10. Remember, if a loved one gives you
a gift and they are very insistent that its because they love you, don't touch
it.

On this day in horror history.... it's one thing to have Karloff or Lugosi in your picture, but both Karloff AND Lugosi!?!? It was unheard of! This was what audiences must have been thinking when 'The Raven' flew into theaters. Not to be confused with the raven that's quoted as saying, "Nevermore". This raven was something else. Something sinister.
my 'classic' thoughts on.... 'Someone's Knocking at the Door'
Dragging the depths of my old horror reviews, I thought they might need to see the light of day again. So, I bring you some of Joel's 'Classic' horror reviews....
(Note to the reader: I must have been in a pretty bad place, at the time I was writing this. As this is a fairly angry review.)
I will never know exactly what possessed me to watch this movie. I've never been so happy to see something be over. There was nothing redeeming about this film. There was nothing interesting about this film. It wasn't a pleasure to watch. The script was god awful, the directing was sub par (at best), the actors were horrific, the plot was z-grade porno with a bit of blood and gore. I don't even want to dignify this movie by explaining the plot. I'm not even sure there was one, to be honest. Basically, it was a lot of gross out things happening and drug use. The ending was predictable and lame, as all get out. I don't even know how in the hell this movie got funding. Let's hope this put the nail in the coffin for anyone involved from ever making a film again. I'd rather watch beige paint dry, than to ever have to watch this again. Less than 1 out of 5 stars, if that was even possible? I suppose that would make it a zero.
Rather than watch this, I'd recommend getting a vasectomy. If you want to see something better, just watch anything other than 'Someone's Knocking at the Door'.

A Terror Time Out featuring 'The Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence)'
It may not be the popular opinion, but Tom Six created a dark masterpiece of body horror, of which you've never seen.
4 out of 5 stars

On this day in horror history.... Neil Marshall released his claustrophobic, cave dwelling monster, masterpiece: 'The Descent' onto the world. Boasting an all female cast of spelunking final girls, this film did for caving, what 'Jaws' did for the water. It's an incredibly frightening and well done film. Not one to be missed or the sequel!
