my top 12.... 'Friday the 13th' films - The Recap!
Well there you have it! You safely navigated your way through Crystal Lake and came out alive. Jason Voorhees will always remain as one of my favorite horror icons. I'm not sure what it is about him? Whether it's the hockey mask, the fact that he's undead or just that he has a real stick to it-ness that keeps me coming back. Either way, I hope you enjoyed your trip back down memory lane. Do you agree with me? What say you Creeps?

my top 12.... 'Friday the 13th' films - number 1
With the upcoming release of the new 'Friday the 13th: The Game', on Xbox One, it's had me thinking a lot about one of my favorite franchises. Granted, it's a bit of a guilty pleasure, Jason has always held a soft spot in my heart among the horror icons. With a new film seemingly in development hell, there is a bright spot with the fan made 'Never Hike Alone', currently in production. However, there's 12 other feature films that have been released since 1980 and I thought it might be fun to rank them, according to which ones I consider to be the best. So here we go, my personal top 12 'Friday the 13th' movies....
Number 1) Friday the 13th Part III
This one will always be my go to movie, in the series. It's the perfect mix of all the things that make 'Friday the 13th' such a great franchise. It's fun, it has great kills, the campers are very full of life (all puns intended) and it just stinks of the 80's. Sadly, I've never actually seen it in 3D, but once again the producers chose to cash in on a popular trend of the time. Let it never be said that 'Friday the 13th' wasn't a trendsetter. I love this movie, in all it's cheesy glory and that's why it will always be my number 1 choice of the 12 films made, to date. 4 out of 5 stars.

Number 2) Friday the 13th (1980)
This one might cause a bit of controversy, as it's the original in the franchise and not in my number 1 spot. However, I'm ranking them on my personal feelings and re-watchability. This one is by far the most pure in it's form, but with the killer being Jason's mother and not himself, makes it a different animal. Also, something about it just doesn't stick with me, in the same way as all the others. With that being said, I still have to give credit where credit is due. This one started it all and is a solid piece of slasher history. 4 out of 5 stars.

my top 12.... 'Friday the 13th' films - number 3
With the upcoming release of the new 'Friday the 13th: The Game', on Xbox One, it's had me thinking a lot about one of my favorite franchises. So here we go, my personal top 12 'Friday the 13th' movies....
Number 3) Freddy vs Jason
Another trend that happened, as a way to boost a dying franchise, pit two icons against each other. This was the first of many to come and one of them that did it the best. (in my opinion) The studios had been teasing this idea, since a throwaway shot happened in 'Jason Goes to Hell'. Freddy's glove pulled Jason's mask down into hell, in the very last shot of the movie. While Ronny Yu's film may have not pleased everyone, it certainly had me in full fan boy mode. I loved this one and still enjoy watching it, to this day. 4 out of 5 stars.

Number 4) Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter
One of my personal favorites, for many reasons. Corey Feldman, Tom Savani and the amazing Crispin Glover. This film really has all the earmarks of a classic 80's slasher film. Great special effects, fun characters, pretty sweet kills and Jason in full effect. Nothing more to say about this one, other than you should see it, at some point. 4 out of 5 stars.

Number 5) Friday the 13th part VI: Jason Lives
With the massive let down of the 'Scooby Doo' ending of part 5, producers were keen on bringing back the original madman in a mask. So, we resurrect Jason from the dead and have him get back to work, offing the local campers. A much more 'fun' entry in the series, part 6 holds a soft spot in a lot of peoples hearts. A worthy contender in my top 12 list and a 3 1/2 out of 5 star entry.

Number 6) Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood
Again, with the same ground being covered over and over, what do you do to keep things fresh? Bring in another character that can match Jason, one for one. In this installment, Jason has met his match, in the form of a girl with telekinesis. They battle it out and things get messy. A fun time in the forest and a 3 out of 5 star film.

Number 7) Friday the 13th: A New Beginning
If you've just killed off your main character.... for good, then what do you do next? You want to keep the franchise going, right? So, the old 'bait and switch' tactic. Most fans of the series, weren't too happy when they realized they'd been duped in part 5. However, it's still a decent part of the series and has a lot going for it. Decent kills and some fairly likable lead characters. 3 out of 5 stars.

Number 8) Friday the 13th part II
Hot off the heels of the original, the studio wanted a sequel. Still a fairly new concept, they did their best to continue the story, but this time.... with Jason in the lead. This film works pretty well, over all, but killing off your most popular character in the first 10 minutes was not the best idea in the world. A solid entry into the franchise and one that still holds up pretty well. 3 out of 5 stars.

Number 9) Friday the 13th part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan
Another trick, used in the horror genre, when you've kind of run out of ideas. Take your main character and put them into a new environment. In this case, New York. While the concept works pretty well, when Jason is ACTUALLY in New York, the other 80% of the movie is spent on a boat. I get that it's hard to make a lower budget horror film in a big city, but think that through before committing to the idea. 3 out of 5 stars.

Number 10) Friday the 13th (2009)
The idea of remaking a classic horror film, isn't anything new. The biggest thing that seems to get missed with that idea, is to keep the character true to its roots. In this Michael Bay produced outing, they did keep Jason fairly pure. Overall, a decent slasher film, for the time it was made. It just doesn't seem to have the same heart and soul as the original though. I actually enjoyed this one, but it's not one that I watch with any regularity. 3 out of 5 stars and kudos to Derek Mears for giving it a good try.

Number 11) Jason X
There was a brief period in horror, where when a franchise had lost steam, the best idea anyone could come up with was.... "Put them in space!" So, we ended up with a few horror icons being launched into orbit and in this case, it was Jason. Not the worst of the series and one that I actually saw in the theaters. While it was kind of a fun take on the character, it was still 2 out of 5 stars, at best. Re-watchable, but not the first one to put into the DVD/Blu-ray player.

Number 12) Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday
When it comes to sequels, this one takes the cake. It takes an already established character and throws a whole lot of new backstory into the mix, that just doesn't work. Jason looks awful (for the short amount of time he's on the screen) and there's very little to enjoy about this entry into the franchise. I would go so far as to say, that it's hard to even watch. 2 out of 5 stars.

5 Serial Killer Movies You May Have Not Yet Seen (and Should) The Complete List
There's no secret that some of our favorite horror movies deal with those creepy bastards that stalk us and want to do unspeakably horrible things to us. From 'Psycho' to 'Hannibal' they have endeared us with their quirkiness, style, and finesse. With glorious one liners and clever kills, they are a fascination both in fiction and reality. Hell, how do think the Creepercast got its name? Speaking of how we got our name, two of the films on this list helped make Creepercast great and connected us with amazing film makers and actors we now call friends. So, without further pontificating, here are 5 serial killer films we believe deserve your attention a little more than the rest...
Nice, normal-looking Leslie Vernon (Nathan Baesel) has an obsession with movie-style slashers like Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger. Leslie decides to follow in the footsteps of his heroes, and, ever the self-promoter, invites a documentary filmmaker (Angela Goethals) and her crew to follow him around as he constructs his own grisly legacy.
Writer/Director Scott Glosserman presents a behind the scenes look at what it takes to be a successful serial killer. Nathan Baesel has razor sharp creep and comedy timing and we even get to see his humble beginnings as his mentor, played by Scott Wilson of 'Walking Dead' fame, steals the spotlight for a moment. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is the perfect storm of suttle and in your face horror homages. We were extremely fortunate in our early days to have Glosserman on the podcast to discuss Behind the Mask. Look for it I'm sure its somewhere on the nets!
Creep (2014)
Aaron answers an online ad and drives to a stranger's house to film him for the day. The man wants to make a movie for his unborn child, but his requests become more bizarre as the day goes along.
Comedian Mark Duplass embodies the hilarity and straight up creepiness of the title of this film.
"It's not often enough that a film comes along that surprises you. I've been lucky enough to have a few of them in the past couple of months. 'Creep' was one of them. I wish I could explain the last 30 minutes in great detail and why it turns into something so incredibly realistic and terrifying, but almost absurdest all at the same time. Mark Duplass turns in a tour de force performance, that proves he's got chops for anything you throw at him." CLICK HERE for Joel's full review.
I Saw The Devil (2010)
On a dark road, a taxi driver comes across a scared female motorist stranded in a broken-down vehicle. He pulls over -- but not to help her. When the woman's head is discovered in a local river, her devastated fiancé, a trained secret agent, becomes obsessed with hunting down her killer. Once he finds him, things get twisted. After brutally beating the murderer, Kim lets him go free, and a demented game of cat and mouse begins.
A tale of murder and revenge from Korean genre master KIM Jee-woon. Oldboy's CHOI Min-sik as our serial killer and Lee Byung-hun who has continued to have martial arts fame. There are several aspects of this film that place it above all others. The most important being the blurred line between revenge and torture for the fun of it making the hero appear a lot like the killer. The other important element is the behind the scenes life of a serial killer and the fringe culture they may have if they did co-habitate, swap stories, and give each other tips and tricks to better their killing experiences. I dare you to not switch sides often while watching!
A vicious serial killer targets armed thieves inside a bank while police surround the building.
Written and directed by Mike Mendez, The Last Heist is a crime/serial killer mish-mash with Henry Rollins in the cold blooded killer role. Rollins has been a tour de force in independent films recently. With 'He Is Not Dead' and now this one, he's proven he can be the lead, kick ass, and still be the most humble bad ass Hollywood has ever met. Now, finally, we get to see Rollins turns on the creep as a serial killer that just happens to be visiting the same closing bank our rag tag outfit of robbers has picked to for the big heist. The title takes on a double meaning as the action and blood commences.
A formal mental patient's repressed anger reaches the boiling point, leading him to embark on a mission of revenge against the thugs who once subjected him to severe physical and mental trauma.
Jack Perez (director) and Ryan Levin (writer) present a kill your bullies masterpiece starring Kevin Corrigan, Barry Bostwick, and the late Karen Black. The title 'Some Guy Who Kills People' is by “design.” There is this amazing juxtaposition between literal and metaphorical killing at work that is both exhilarating and cathartic. Ken Boyd is “Every-Guy-Who-Has-Survived-Childhood-Prosecution-But-Not-Without-Several-Years-of-Therapy” because he represents geeks, nerds, and outcasts who can feel for, nay, identify with the mentality that lead to Ken murdering these bullies on the page. But is he responsible for the literal killings going on around town? CLICK HERE to read a full review, and HERE for the Barry Bostwick interview!
Honorable Mention goes too...
A lonely young woman descends into madness when she becomes the caretaker of a mysterious New York mansion that has a troubled past.
A mentally unhinged factory worker must decide whether to listen to his talking cat and become a killer, or follow his dog's advice to keep striving for normalcy.
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon (2006)
Nice, normal-looking Leslie Vernon (Nathan Baesel) has an obsession with movie-style slashers like Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger. Darling (2015)
Mickey Keating's decent into madness tale that may or may not have a ghost involved. Brought to us from Glass Eye Pictures and featuring Lauren Ashley Carter, Darling is a wicked entry into the Death Wave phenomenon currently sweeping through horror. Deliciously dark and devious.
Voices (2014)
Ryan Reynolds is well known for sneaking a few unexpecteds into his repertoire, and this time he took Anna Kendrick with him. A brilliantly dark humored trip into the mind of true madness. Also contains commentary on how drugs may be keeping us from seeing the reality of the horrors we are faced with daily.

We were extremely fortunate in our early days to have Glosserman on the podcast to discuss Behind the Mask. Look for it I'm sure its somewhere on the nets!
