joel.'s top 13 horror films of 2018.... #12
Every year, you never know what the horror genre is going to unleash upon the world. You have an unsuspecting audience, just waiting to have their deepest and darkest fears manipulated.... all in the comfort of an air conditioned theater or their home. Not every year has been full of winners, some have proven to be better than others, but 2018 has yielded some very interesting genre fare that is full of a little bit of everything under the sun. My fellow creeps, I've put together what I feel (in my humble opinion) to be the best of the best for this year. There were a few that were nudged out by only inches and that's not a bad thing. It just proves that there are more stories to tell and makes me dream about all the amazing scares yet to come. So, without further adieu, I give you my top 13 horror films of 2018! (based on release dates and not the years they were filmed.... although some may be in the last quarter of 2017.)
12) 'Mandy'
Nicolas Cage has been on a comeback trail recently, by jumping into the deep end of the horror pool. To be honest, I don't mind one bit. I used to be a huge fan and would seek out everything he did, but somewhere along the way.... he lost his way. Now, I'm starting to feel the Cage love again. However, the star of this film is truly Andrea Riseborough. She oozes a bizarre charisma that lights up the screen and makes you feel why she's the name on the poster. There's a lot to unpack in this film, let's not mince words. It doesn't always maintain the momentum it starts with, but it's still a crazy train ride that's worth the price of admission. If you haven't seen this yet, now is the time. Turn up the surround sound, turn off the lights and get ready for a hell of a ride!

12) 'Death Note'
Adam Wingard is one of the more recent directors that's revitalized horror. With his most recent entry, 'Death Note', he's split the fandom in half. Taking the beloved anime and turning it into a live action/American film, was never going to be an easy task. You can't please everyone. Not too mention, the source material has had years of history behind it and a rabid fan base. After viewing the entire series, I can see where he left lots of the original material out. There was just too much to encompass in one film. Personally, I enjoyed both and view them as separate entities. Regardless of your personal opinions on how the two compare, you can't argue that Adam's made a solid film and one that should be seen. A Netflix original and a fascinating entry into his ever growing body of work. He's now made my list two years running!

my top 12.... 'Friday the 13th' films - number 12
With the upcoming release of the new 'Friday the 13th: The Game', on Xbox One, it's had me thinking a lot about one of my favorite franchises. Granted, it's a bit of a guilty pleasure, Jason has always held a soft spot in my heart among the horror icons. With a new film seemingly in development hell, there is a bright spot with the fan made 'Never Hike Alone', currently in production. However, there's 12 other feature films that have been released since 1980 and I thought it might be fun to rank them, according to which ones I consider to be the best. So here we go, my personal top 12 'Friday the 13th' movies....
Number 12) Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday
When it comes to sequels, this one takes the cake. It takes an already established character and throws a whole lot of new backstory into the mix, that just doesn't work. Jason looks awful (for the short amount of time he's on the screen) and there's very little to enjoy about this entry into the franchise. I would go so far as to say, that it's hard to even watch. 2 out of 5 stars.

my top 13 "Final Girls".... #12
What's a 'Final Girl' you might ask? She's the last woman standing at the end of a horror film. Usually the one who defeats the killer. In this list, I'll give you my top 13 'Final Girls' in horror of all time. Without furtur ado....
#12: Sarah Carter from 'The Descent' played by Shauna Macdonald
A broken woman who has to overcome a continuing onslaught of terror, she steps up and takes control. She's a prime example of a woman who rises to the occasion in every way.
