Good Tidings (2016) Review

A homeless war veteran with a checkered past must rely on a suppressed side of himself when he and his companions are targeted on Christmas Day by three vicious psychopaths in Santa suits.

Director: Stuart W. Bedford; Writers: Stuart W. Bedford, Giovanni Gentile; Stars: Colin Murtagh, Alexander Mounsey, Stu Jopia

The long awaited ultra low budget UK Christmas offering has finally arrived! We've been hearing about this one since last Christmas, back when it was first supposed to come out. They decided to hold it back due to the overwhelming popularity of Krampus. After all, the budget and subject couldn't dare to compete and one of the best ways to get your holiday movie seen is to be the only holiday movie available. Therefore Good Tidings is the only holiday horror for this giving season right on the 25th. Let's just say that for a ultra low indy it truly satisfies our penchant for murdering Santa's. Rather, Santa's that murder.

It goes like this... We open on a trio of crazy wrapped face guys taking out a hung over Santa and discovering Santa suites in the boot of his car. From there we meet our troubled vet whose talking to another homeless man about the shelter they've made use of. From here the characters develope between touching scenes and killer Santa craziness. Even our Santas get developed (the credits give them stooges names) with the skinny simpleton like candy cane sucker dominating screen time and a big monster Santa to rule them all. The candy cane obviously comes into play later (how many of us have imagined what we could do with a perfectly sharpened candy cane). He also loves to mumble Christmas tunes and gets a little soft. Meanwhile the other Santas enjoy their games of cat and mouse with the rest of the homeless. I always find it interesting that in slasher films the killer always wipes out the easy prey first, saving the stronger for last as if they like the challenge. Our Santas in Good Tidings definitely like their sport.

Good Tidings has very little blood and gore but it is there, just enough to let you know its real. Some kills happen off screen and I have a feeling that is due to budget constraints and the inability to realize the kill. Artful filmography and character development makes the lack of onscreen violence reasonable. The use of Christmas music for clever ambiance is well done. The Santa's only speak once, when the big guy growls at a woman to scream. The rest of the time they are like gorillas in Santa masks.

There's a lot about the film that seems like a bad idea. The tortured vet with a shady past story-line is overdone, to be honest, so is the caricature of the druggy whore looking to make good. But they are stereotypes we know and love. We all want to see the down and out rise above. Especially since Good Tidings is a horror film that celebrates a holiday that reinforces change for the better. It's also strange the serial killing Santa's would choose a homeless shelter of all places to attack. But then, these Santa's weren't at all concerned with who they were killing, just that they had fun doing it. The one spoiler I will give involves a possible bomb, which seems out of place given the other kills. I feel like this film is making a political statement about the treatment of the homeless. The character development lends me to continue that belief. Though I don't feel the film needed it, every horror film has a statement to make. Thankfully Good tidings is full of every expected trope, including some clever kills, and does not disappoint.

Uber Spencer Reviews: A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)

This movie sucked! I really hated this film because it took a film series I loved and a character I love and just stomped it to the ground and just soiled on it. Only good thing I liked about the film was the concept for Freddy! Having Freddy look like a real burn victim instead of the comically looking Freddy Wes designed him to be which wasn't the first way Wes wanted Freddy to look. He wanted Freddy to be menacing and scary but went with more comic Freddy like we all know and love and used his original concept for New Nightmare. There's nothing appealing to Freddys face and after watching Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trailer the crappy Michael Bay film, Freddy looks just like them and that's creepy knowing Bay produced the remake. The jump scares were so lame and don't get me wrong when I first watched it the film scared the living crap out of me but now I just yawn. The actin was substantial and Jackie Earl Haley was no Freddy it was just Rorshach from Watchman, he couldn't change his voice that was deja vu! Rooney Mara is my favorite actress so is her sister Kate and she did a fantastic job as Nancy!  But there's nothing good about Nightmare and between this and the Friday the 13th remake from 2009 Friday gets a better rating than this garbage!  He Nightmare remake is nothing but a complete waste of everyone's time and for those who 1. Defend this film and say they liked or loved it and 2. Defend Michael Bay as a director are just morons, Michael Bay is nothing but a lame director who ruins childhoods everywhere! Nightmare remake is just brutal, its, its just pure garbage!

Nightmare remake gets 1/5 stabs, only good thing about this film is Rooney Mara and the design for Freddy as a pure burn victim more so than the actual design of the face and the voice was so much like Watchman!

MONSTER FEST ANNOUNCES 2016 AWARD WINNERS

Australia’s premier genre film festival Monster Fest wrapped its most successful edition to date last night in Melbourne with Official Closing Film THE GREASY STRANGLER (with actors Sky Elobar and Elizabeth De Razzo in person) followed by its annual awards ceremony acknowledging the best of this year’s impressive lineup. The festival’s 6th edition ran from November 24-27 at the Lido Cinemas, preceded by their industry component, the Swinburne University Media and Communication Monster Academy on November Nov 23 and 24.

The features jury, consisting of Fantastic Fest head programmer Evrim Ersoy, filmmaker Donna McRae and longtime screen critic Simon Foster awarded the festival’s top prize, The Golden Monster, to Julia Ducournau’s RAW, with Ducournau in person to accept her award, beautifully designed and sculpted by Rain Gidley Studios. RAW also walked away with an honour for best FX. “RAW is a tour de force of invention, innovation and storytelling,” says juror Donna McRae, “A film that celebrates appetite and difference.”

Feature film awards also went to André Øvredal’s THE AUTOPSY OF JANE DOE, dual awards for the Australian home invasion feature SAFE NEIGHBOURHOOD (including a Best Performance award for young actor Levi Miller), Bartosz M. Kowalski’s PLAYGROUND, Alice Lowe’s PREVENGE, Sophia Takal’s ALWAYS SHINE and more.

In the short film category, jurors Barbara Creed (author of the seminal book The Monstrous-Feminine), filmmaker Heidi Lee Douglas and visiting television scholar Amanda Reyes handed top awards to André Øvredal’s THE TUNNEL, Kristy Guevara-Flanagan’s documentary short WHAT HAPPENED TO HER and Kiefer Findlow’s INSOMNOLENCE, while the Trasharama Program gave its Golden Lomax Award to Finnish director Chrzu Lindstrom’s THE CONTRACT and its inaugural Encouragement Award to Australian filmmaker Frank Daft for BLOWN AWAY.

There were huge waves of emotions running through the films,” says short film juror Amanda Reyes, “whether it be legitimate fear and terror, or grief or even wildly raucous humor. INSOMNOLENCE, which won the Best Australian Short category is a prime example of combining terror and sadness in unique ways that sat deeply with the jury. Same with THE TUNNEL, which won for Best International Short. THE TUNNEL is visually stunning, but it is the tragedy held within the simple gut punch ending that made it an unforgettable experience.”

This Years Required Horror Christmas Viewing Part 1: Rare Exports (2010)

A young boy named Pietari (Onni Tommila) and his friend Juuso (Ilmari Järvenpää) think a secret mountain drilling project near their home in northern Finland has uncovered the tomb of Santa Claus. However, this a monstrous, evil Santa, much unlike the cheery St. Nick of legend. When Pietari's father (Jorma Tommila) captures a feral old man (Peeter Jakobi) in his wolf trap, the man may hold the key to why reindeer are being slaughtered and children are disappearing.

JP's Random Review: May (2002)

“Proof that the best way for a unstable person to find a friend is to make one... using the best parts of those you thought were friends!” - Creepercast

Lucky McKee is no stranger to writing/directing films about strong psychotic women (you may recall us talking about Woman a few years ago). May seems to represent the beginning of an exploration into psychologically damaged women that get revenge in creative ways, which lead to the Masters of Horror entry Sick Girl, the full length feature The Woods, and the aforementioned Woman. And what better way to begin than with an ensemble cast like the Girl, Interrupted; the Scary Movie queen, and a guy from Six Feet Under? That's a rhetorical question, there is no better way!

May is a slow moving film that takes its time building up the main character's awkwardness in dealing with social situations. It is through the strangeness that is the other characters that she develops misunderstandings of how social relationships work and eventually takes it too far. At least to far by normal standards, by her own standards she did the only thing she could do. She sought out the most beautiful part of every person that helped stunt and bastardize her development and inevitable creates her own, perfect partner. This isn't a spoiler, its a tease. Mostly what you should be watching this movie for is to realize that we are all messed up in some way like these characters,  like Adam's love for avant garde filmmaking, Polly's fetishes (by the way I'm still trying to grasp Anna Faris as a brunette, otherwise she was exactly as bubble headed as I expected), or whatever your thing may be (like ours at the Creepercast is the horror genre). Poor May is exposed to all the best and worst of humanity and her understanding of it is twisted, ultimately causing a breakdown that really was just waiting to happen anyway. May is truly an innocents exploration into the darker side of humanity and what she gets out of it is even darker and more twisted, naturally.

Til next we bleed,

J.P.

MUSIC NEWS: Prog-Metal Fusion Group PAINTED IN EXILE Reveals Keyboard Playthrough Track Sampler Video

Watch Now via MusicRadar.com

New Full-Length Album The Ordeal is Out Now, Order Here

Produced by Jamie King (Between the Buried And Me, The Contortionist, Scale The Summit)

Artwork by Aaron Marsh

Two weeks ago, PAINTED IN EXILE dropped their long-awaited full length album, The Ordeal. The reviews are in, and the critics have deemed that the wait was worth it. Heavy Blog is Heavy calls it, "endearing and moving", while MetalSucks hails it as "a complex beast", further claiming, "PAINTED IN EXILE have found their own voice". Featuring PAINTED IN EXILE's signature sound that further melds classic rock, jazz, classical and even hip-hop influences, The Ordeal transcends far beyond what PAINTED IN EXILE has released to date, fully showcasing the band's gifted and refreshed line-up.

If you haven't picked up your copy of The Ordeal yet, you can sample some new tracks featuring accompanying performances by PAINTED IN EXILE keyboardist Alan Hankers via a new playthrough video. Music Radar has an exclusive look at the video - watch here: http://www.musicradar.com/news/tech/this-crushingly-heavy-keyboard-playthrough-is-the-classical-metal-fusion-youve-been-waiting-for-644498

Hankers states, "A lot of what I write as a keyboardist is influenced by my background as a classically trained pianist. While writing the album, my goal was to create a unique synthesized sound that from time to time would subtly allude to my influences of the past. In this excerpt video, you'll hear everything from 19th century style harmony, to dissonant clusters and "dirty" synths that double guitar riffs."

Want more PIE? Who doesn't! Check out PAINTED IN EXILE's new music video for their single "House of Cards" here, and then watch bassist Jacob Umansky play through the track via Bass Player.

The Ordeal was produced, recorded, mixed and mastered by Jamie King - recognized for his work with bands such as Between the Buried And MeThe Contortionist, Scale The Summit and other modern progressive metal mainstays. The album was recorded at both Basement Recording Studios in Winston-Salem, NC and The Fidelitorium in Kernersville, NC. Orchestral arrangements on the album were written by Alan Hankers. Additional production and engineering support was provided by PAINTED IN EXILE guitarist Ivan Chopik.

After unquestionably solidifying themselves as a band-to-watch in the progressive metal scene with 2008's 3.14 demo and 2009's Revitalized EP - the latter of which NoCleanSinging.com called, "a creative fireball of attention-grabbing music," and TeethOfTheDivine.com touted as "mind-blowing" - fans have been eagerly awaiting a full-fledged comeback. After dropping a track here (specifically 2014's "DM") and a hint there for the last few years, PAINTED IN EXILE fully crowd-funded The Ordeal this year with massive fan support via Indiegogo campaign (the band actually surpassed their goal of $15,000).

PAINTED IN EXILE is:
Robert Richards - Vocals
Ivan Chopik - Guitars
Marc Lambert - Guitars
Alan Hankers - Piano & Keyboard
Jacob Umansky - Bass & Backing Vocals
Eddie DeCesare - Drums & Percussion
