NEWS: Nic Cage vs. Sharks in Not-Quite-Jaws Prequel ‘USS Indianapolis’

There are a handful of iconic scenes in Jaws, but none more memorable than Quint’s monologue about the sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis. “Eleven-hundred men went into the water,” he tells Hooper and Brody. “Three-hundred and sixteen men come out – sharks took the rest.” The terrifying story is quite true, and now a film is headed our way that tells the entirety of that story.

So basically, it’s a Jaws prequel. Except its not.

Directed by Mario Van Peebles (yes, THAT Mario Van Peebles – there’s only one), USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage stars Nicolas Cage as Captain Charles Butler McVay, a real-life figure who was aboard the ship on that fateful day in 1945. In the film, just like in real life, the ship is sunk by torpedo while on a top secret mission, and the men aboard are forced to fend for their lives.
Oh and yes, there are totally sharks in the water. And Nic Cage is basically playing a young Quint – again, not at all, because Nic actually only ever plays Nic.

As noted by Variety, who got the exclusive on the trailer…

“Because the ship was without an escort, the Indianapolis was not reported missing until four days later. Of 1,197 crewmen aboard, approximately 300 went down with the ship, while the rest faced exposure, dehydration, saltwater poisoning and shark attacks as they waited for assistance. Only 317 sailors survived, and McVay was court-martialed, then exonerated more than half a century later.”
