Independent Review Revisit: Circus of the Dead (2015)

"Writer and director Billy Ponn is one sick MF! Not only did he manage to take the irrational fear of clowns and legitimize it, but I'm certain he held a gun to the head of the entire crew to make this film. Circus of the Dead is torturous, raunchy, bloody good fun with grease paint, guns, and sharp objects." - Jeff of the Creepercast

The above statements are true, unless of course they are false. In which case they are definitely true. I also mean it in the most endearing, sick MF loving kind of way. Kinda like how Pappa Corn gives "it" what "it" wants, with a little less screaming, screaming is annoying, but keeps "it" happy. Circus of the Dead is an evil clown lovers dream, and the perfect nightmare for our clown fearing friends (right Jason?). It's also easy to believe that in the state that brought us Leatherface, Pappa and crew may exist. Not a comforting thought now that I think of it. And we're neighbors, will the clowns be coming here next?

Our murdering cast of clowns is not without a purpose. Their enigmatic leader Bill Oberst Jr (Pappa Corn) is actually playing a game of Lotería in which he matches the characters on the cards to their future victims. This is what draws his and his crües attention to doting family man Donald (Parrish Randall – The Quick and the Undead), his faithless wife Tiffany (Chanel Ryan – Bad Kids Go to Hell), and their daughter Rose. As if we haven't done enough Creepercast family name dropping Brad Potts (Zombies vs Strippers)  also graces the screen with his “tough as nails” Trooper Weaver. These are only the big names in Circus of the Dead, the soon to be big names are the clowns themselves who have already made their screen debut in Doll Boy. I am, of course, referring to my favorite Noodledome (Ryan Clapp). There's also Mister Blister (Rusty Edwards), Jumbo (Mike Williams), after all, you can't have a true circus clown act without a little person or Pepe the Mime (Kyle Mueller). All of these killer clowns have something strangely endearing about them, and all are deadly little bastards that reminded me fondly of Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Oh yeah, our beloved Doll Boy (Sergio Gracida) pops in to bring the hammer down as well.

Circus of the Dead has been the most anticipated film of 2014. You've heard us talk to director Billy Ponn on the podcast and several news related articles have invaded the web with the warning that “The circus is coming, hide!” All with good reason, Circus of the Dead is an unrelenting slaughter fest. Pappa Corn is the ultimate evil that only wants to match his cards even it means taking you under his wing long enough to warp your logical brain into sillypuddy. His sidekicks all have personalities of their own even though they are obviously just in it for the kill of it (rumor has it Mr Fister will get his own feature!) The entire film is a roller coaster ride to death and mayhem. Ponn is also a genius at marketing, when you finally get a chance to check out this film notice the Perro Azul cigs and all the beer labels are of his own creation. On top of that Ponn uses every media available to push the circus on the masses with trading cards, specially designed posters, etc. I'm expecting action figures in the next months and hope I'm put on the list for Pappa Corn. I mean, who wouldn't want a Bill Oberst Jr. action figure that yells “It gets what it wants!” at everyone that walks by.

Circus of the Dead is not for everyone, but if you dig yourself some killer clown violence and mayhem its a do not miss...

Kreepy Kev Comments on The Colony (2013)

(The Colony has) Decent production values, competent direction, a couple of A-listers in a cast of mostly unkowns... easily the ingredients for a good time in the arctic apocalypse, right? Not with a script that starts out iffy and becomes more and more insipid as it progresses. This must be how guys like Bill Paxton and Lawrence Fishburne make extra cash between real gigs. Stay away from this turd.

BREAKING NEWS! 'Halloween' reboot may finally have legs! (and a knife)

Good Evening, Creeps!
The rumor mill has been buzzing this week about some pretty exciting 'Halloween' news! It would seem that Blumhouse will be picking up the 'Halloween' franchise and giving it another reboot. Jason Blum made the announcement with Zanne Devine and David Thwaites from Miramax and Malek Akkad from Trancas. Malek is the son of the man that believed in 'Halloween' and continued the terror, until his untimely death. Even, with all of that power behind it, the icing on the cake was the announcement that John Carpenter would be teaming up with them as an executive producer and possibly even scoring the film!

There wasn't a lot of information, but Blum was quoted as saying:
“We’re not being vague because we know and we’re not telling. We’re being vague because we don’t know. We’re talking about different things. But I do feel like all of us kind of want to go back to that – I don’t know. I’m going out on a limb here. Malek, you guys tell me if you disagree – I don’t think we want to make it too meta, you know what I mean? We want to make it like it was – back to the basics – and not get into too much back story which we don’t need.”

This may be the combination that this franchise needs. Granted, I'm a die hard fan of both of Rob Zombie's installments and felt that they laid the groundwork for something really worthwhile. Granted, part 2 ended with a bit of an impossible scenario or one that would be difficult to carry on with. However, nothing is impossible with Michael Myers. But with that being said, I can't deny that the combination of producers, studio and John Carpenter, makes me drool a little.

As if this news wasn't enough, there was talk of 'Oculus' and 'Hush' director Mike Flanagen possibly wanting to direct. However there has been even more recent rumblings of another candidate who might breathe life in the Shape. Adam Wingard, director of 'You're Next' and 'The Guest' went viral with a lot of posts about 'Halloween' and is a very proud fan boy of the series of films. While nothing is set in stone yet, he would make an amazing choice to sit behind the lens and create something new and scary again.

All we can do for now, is wait and hope that everything finally pans out for Michael and his murderous intentions.

"JOHN CARPENTER TO EXECUTIVE PRODUCE NEW ‘HALLOWEEN’ FOR MIRAMAX®, TRANCAS AND BLUMHOUSE

Jason Blum said: “Halloween is one of those milestone films that inspired everyone at our company to get into the world of scary movies. The great Malek Akkad and John Carpenter have a special place in the hearts of all genre fans and we are so excited that Miramax brought us together. We cannot wait to find and collaborate with the right filmmaker to give Halloween fans the movie they deserve.”David Thwaites will oversee the reboot for MIRAMAX® with Carpenter and the companies planning to immediately go out to filmmakers and fast-track the project.

The Academy Award®-winning John Carpenter has written, directed, composed and/or edited over 20 films over the course of his career. An international household name, he is probably best known for his iconic features Halloween, The Thing, The Fog and Big Trouble in Little China, to name a few. As a musician, Carpenter kicks off his world tour in Los Angeles later this month, featuring songs from his Lost Themes and Lost Themes II albums – which he recorded with his son, Cody Carpenter. The 30+ city tour ends in Paris late November. He is repped by APA and Stankevich Law."
Christmas may be coming earlier than expected for all of the 'Halloween' fans!

On Tour Now with Ill Niño & More on the "15 Years of Revolution" Tour
New Album The Sun Shining Cold out Later this Year

New Jersey heavy alt-rock artists VOODOO TERROR TRIBE are currently on the road with Latin metal kings Ill Niño on their "15 Years of Revolution" Tour. The band is gearing up to release a new album, The Sun Shining Cold, later this year - produced by Ill Niño vocalist Cristian Machado. In anticipation of the album's release, the band is pleased to reveal the music video for their new single "City of Sixes". You can watch it now via Loudwire's New Music Showcase: http://loudwire.com/new-music-showcase-exclusive-premieres-from-knee-high-fox-the-reaktion-voodoo-terror-tribe-zodiac/

The music video for "City of Sixes" is directed by Scott Hansen (Motionless in White, A Day To Remember, We Came As Romans) and produced by Mary Dixon and Bedelia Burris-McGrath, with co-production from VOODOO TERROR TRIBE and John Brennan.

Guitarist and synth programmer Emir Erkal states, "This new video is a camp-commentary on modern society, showing Voodoo Terror Tribe as something like 'bladerunners'; masquerading as musicians to snuff out a club full of party-goers for being "just too modern"."
The Sun Shining Cold promises to be VOODOO TERROR TRIBE's most sonically advanced offering yet! Producer Cristian Machado recognized the raw talent within the band and knew they had something special to offer to the rock scene. "This album is possibly one of the best metal albums I've ever been a part of," states Machado. "You don't always get to work with such talented musicians who just so happen to be mature and dedicated to bringing something fresh to the evolution of the genre. I comfortably refer to them as "haunted metal" but in all honesty they are a new breed of metal yet to be heard under this style and context. In my heart of hearts, I truly believe they are here to contribute an impressive approach and styling to the evolution of metal."
Erkal adds, "This is an album full of surprises, with heavy guitars and crushing drums, but yet melodic and catchy tunes with layers of haunted, mysterious, electronic and industrial sounds, with mainly dark, twisted concepts, where we're at a post-apocalyptic, decaying life, with still hopes to prevail and for the sun to shine hot again... I can proudly say that without a doubt this is the best work that we, as VOODOO TERROR TRIBE, have ever done and can't wait for everyone to hear!"
About VOODOO TERROR TRIBE:
Hailing from the Garden State of New Jersey and dedication to a melodically heavy brand of music, VOODOO TERROR TRIBE has high hopes for the near future. Formed by Emir Erkal on guitars (an Istanbul, Turkey native who moved to USA in order to take his musical career to the next level) and longtime friend T-Bone on drums, the duo soon brought in Primer on bass and topped off their alt-metal sound with the masterfully vocalized emotional poetry by vocalist Gil PZ.
Their discography includes 2005's Mandala EP, 2007's Alone In Pain, 2009's Symptoms of Sinrecorded with Billy Graziadei (Biohazard / Suicide City), 2011's Stands To Reason EP, which they toured heavily in support of. 2014's A Walk in Hell EP soon followed, featuring the track "BloodSoaked", which also was featured by way of music video and premiered via Revolver Magazine - taking the band to a whole new level. VOODOO TERROR TRIBE has previously performed with Biohazard, W.A.S.P., LA Guns, The Rods, Spread Eagle and beyond.

A LovesDragons Momentary Review: The Last House On Cemetery Lane (2015)

Ummm, is this movie over with yet? The music is okay I guess. This guy rents this house because he’s a writer trying to create a new story. The realtor tells him this old lady lives on the third floor and won’t be a bother. Writer falls in love with the girl down the road. Loved listening to the British accents which is all the love I can portray for this movie. Things start happening around the house and he wants answers from the old lady upstairs. She tells him she can’t hide it any more that her daughter killed her best friend and she helped hide her in the wall, blah, blah blah. Oh and wait for it? It’s the lovely girl that he’s been seeing this whole time. Wow, so unpredictable! He now has his story, the end.

Creepy Projects to Support: Bonfire Films Indiegogo for 'White Drift'

In case you couldn't tell, we Creeps love our independent horrors. That much said, we also love to support those projects from horror provider greats like Corey Norman and Bonfire Films. Here's a new project from Norman and crew you can get in on awesome perks just for supporting...

"White Drift is the newest short film from Bonfire Films, made as part of the 2016 Damnationland Film Festival. The film focuses a drifter who arrives in a small Maine town, suffering from the symptoms of withdrawal. When a local waitress takes an interest in him, she soon realizes that he's not an addict, but instead a werewolf beginning his transformation.

Inspired by the werewolf movies of our youth, White Drift presents a new take on the werewolf story geared for modern audiences, while still using the practical effects techniques that made us fall in love with the genre years ago."

Today, the singer has revealed her first two lyric videos for what are undoubtedly the biggest songs on the album - the never-before-heard monster rock track "Save Me", and the equally huge "Invincible", which saw it's radio debut last month via Long Island's 94.3 The Shark.
Right now, you can watch/hear "Save Me" for the very first time via Revolvermag.com and take the first look at the lyric video for "Invincible" via the 93.3 WMMR FM (Philadelphia) "Local Shots" blog.

Alongside her musical teammate and producer/co-writer/drummer Charlie Zeleny (otherwise known by DRMAGDN and for his work with Dream Theater's Jordan Rudess, Blotted Science, Behold the Arctopus and others), BELLA D has created a world of her own with her steampunk-inspired lyrics and haunting melodies. Last week saw the release of their aforementioned standalone cover of Muse's hit "Starlight", re-imagined as a dark and mysterious version. Watch the music video for "Starlight" here: https://youtu.be/yyha-Wl_lOE
***Listeners should note again that "Starlight" is not available on the upcoming album, The Crystal Ceiling, and can only be purchased via iTunes as a single.
More about The Crystal Ceiling:
The Crystal Ceiling features session musicians known for working with multi-platinum artists such as (but not limited to) Taylor Swift, Blondie, Avril Lavigne, Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen and David Guetta. Impressively, not one of the musicians on the album aside from BELLA D and DRMAGDN recorded in the same room - this entire album is a true product of the future, utilizing the great power of the internet to craft it. The Crystal Ceilingis chock full of unforgettable, top-notch rock tracks featuring superior production and unmatched musical execution, sure to impress even the most discerning of palates.
The Crystal Ceiling is more than just a concept album - it is born of real life inspiration. The theme of escape from terrible circumstances, surmounting impossible obstacles and overcoming tragedy as a victorious hero is not just a fairy-tale - it's Christie Oakes' (the voice behind BELLA D) life story. Midway through the album recording process, Oakes received the terrible news that she had BRCA positive aggressive breast cancer and needed to not only endure grueling high dose chemotherapy, but also have massive surgery to remove both breasts and her ovaries, similar to Angelina Jolie. Since then, her music has taken on a higher stakes/real life-and-death meaning.
