My #3 pick for best Horror films of 2016 By William S. Mayfield

What do you get when you have a secluded cove in the middle of Mexico, a beautiful blonde and a killer shark? You get The Shallows. Every once in awhile a movie comes along that reminds us of our natural fears. This all started for me way back in the 70's with the release of the classic Jaws. This not only introduced the public to the dangers of the evil great white shark but made everyone feel like that they were not even safe in a bath tub. Know these days we know that sharks are just animals and are not the evil creatures from below the waves that Hollywood wants us to believe.

The Shallows starts off with Nancy played by Blake Lively on a trip to Mexico to find a cove her mother visited when she was a young girl. She hires a guide to take her and surf board there. After arriving she finds that other surfers are already there. This does not stop Nancy as she hits the waves and try's to enjoy her vacation. Soon she comes across the carcass of dead whale and finds why a great white shark would be anywhere near this picture perfect setting. She is quickly cornered on a reef and the real tension begins. There is a few scenes of the shark interacting with surfers that make anything you have seen in previous shark movies look like a guppy attack. The effects in this movie really surprised me on every level. Blake Lively puts forth a great performance and look super sexy doing it. The tension gets worse as we see she is wounded from her first encounter with the shark is that she winds up completely alone over night on a reef with not much besides a bikini. The bleakness is there and puts you right there with our heroine. This film will remind you we have no business in the ocean, at all. It really gives me the creeps that there is creatures out there like this shark. I know that they are part of nature and needed but it doesn't make me feel any better.

joel.'s top 13 horror films of 2016.... #3

Every year, you never know what the horror genre is going to unleash upon the world. You have an unsuspecting audience, just waiting to have their deepest and darkest fears manipulated.... all in the comfort of an air conditioned theater or their home. Not every year has been full of winners, some have proven to be better than others, but 2016 has yielded some very interesting genre fare that is full of a little bit of everything under the sun. My fellow creeps, I've put together what I feel (in my humble opinion) to be the best of the best for this year. There were a few that were nudged out by only inches and that's not a bad thing. It just proves that there are more stories to tell and makes me dream about all the amazing scares yet to come. So, without further adieu, I give you my top 13 horror films of 2016! (based on release dates and not the years they were filmed.... although some may be in the last quarter of 2015.)

3) Darling

The horror genre is often seen as a form of escapism that has no real artist merit. A way for people to exorcise their demons through monsters and madmen. What is often taken for granted, is what it's actually capable of. Just look at the films of Alfred Hitchcock, those are marveled at as masterful tales of suspense and cinematography. However, they're never even thought of in the same breath as the modern works of horror. It's a shame, really, because with the 'Deathwave' movement and some of the rising stars in the genre, we're seeing some new ground being broken on a daily basis. Mickey Keating is another one of the directors on this list that is pushing those boundries. Every one of his films is entirely different from the next. Never one to settle for any specific prototype, he's doing what he wants and it's amazing. 'Darling' is his latest outing and surely to be considered as a masterwork in his body of work. It's a spiritual successor to Alfred Hitchcock's 'Psycho' and has some of the most beautifully shot sequences of any film to date. I can't say enough good things about this film and Lauren Ashley Carter's portrayal as the lead. It's not only a character study in psychosis, but a film about the occult, and a meditation on loneliness. I know that's saying a lot, but you have to see it to understand. This is one not too miss.

5 Serial Killer Movies You May Have Not Yet Seen (and Should) #3 I Saw The Devil (2010)

There's no secret that some of our favorite horror movies deal with those creepy bastards that stalk us and want to do unspeakably horrible things to us. From 'Psycho' to 'Hannibal' they have endeared us with their quirkiness, style, and finesse. With glorious one liners and clever kills, they are a fascination both in fiction and reality. Hell, how do think the Creepercast got its name? Speaking of how we got our name, two of the films on this list helped make Creepercast great and connected us with amazing film makers and actors we now call friends. So, without further pontificating, here are 5 serial killer films we believe deserve your attention a little more than the rest...

I Saw The Devil (2010)

On a dark road, a taxi driver comes across a scared female motorist stranded in a broken-down vehicle. He pulls over -- but not to help her. When the woman's head is discovered in a local river, her devastated fiancé, a trained secret agent, becomes obsessed with hunting down her killer. Once he finds him, things get twisted. After brutally beating the murderer, Kim lets him go free, and a demented game of cat and mouse begins.

A tale of murder and revenge from Korean genre master KIM Jee-woon. Oldboy's CHOI Min-sik as our serial killer and Lee Byung-hun who has continued to have martial arts fame. There are several aspects of this film that place it above all others. The most important being the blurred line between revenge and torture for the fun of it making the hero appear a lot like the killer. The other important element is the behind the scenes life of a serial killer and the fringe culture they may have if they did co-habitate, swap stories, and give each other tips and tricks to better their killing experiences. I dare you to not switch sides often while watching!
