TERRIFIER

"A maniacal clown terrorizes three young women on Halloween night and everyone else who stands in his way."

TERRIFIER is an American horror film directed by Damien Leone and starring David Howard Thornton, Jenna Kanell, and Catherine Corcoran. It is based on Leone's short film of the same name which was featured in his anthology All Hallows' Eve.

Our new favorite evil Halloween clown is, without a doubt, Art from TERRIFIER. He had earned that position already with his brief appearance in the anthology All Hallows' Eve. He has cemented that postion with his feature film debute. TERRIFIER is everything a slasher fan loves with equal percentages of indy glory, grindhouse gore, torture porn, and 80
's nostalgia. Art, truly is, an artist.

Every year, you never know what the horror genre is going to unleash upon the world. You have an unsuspecting audience, just waiting to have their deepest and darkest fears manipulated.... all in the comfort of an air conditioned theater or their home. Not every year has been full of winners, some have proven to be better than others, but 2018 has yielded some very interesting genre fare that is full of a little bit of everything under the sun. My fellow creeps, I've put together what I feel (in my humble opinion) to be the best of the best for this year. There were a few that were nudged out by only inches and that's not a bad thing. It just proves that there are more stories to tell and makes me dream about all the amazing scares yet to come. So, without further adieu, I give you my top 13 horror films of 2018! (based on release dates and not the years they were filmed.... although some may be in the last quarter of 2017.)

8) 'A Quiet Place'

Original concepts are few and far between. 'A Quiet Place' came out of nowhere and took some elements of other horror films and tweaked them in such a way that it made something new and different. While it has some flaws, they can all be overlooked by the way it's all executed. It plays on my love of films about overwhelming odds and adds the element of being forced to remain quiet to stay alive. Plus, how many films do you know of utilize American Sign Language? If you've not seen this one, please stop reading this and go watch. You won't regret it.

HEREDITARY

"After the family matriarch passes away, a grieving family is haunted by tragic and disturbing occurrences, and begin to unravel dark secrets."

HEREDITARY is an American supernatural psychological horror film written and directed by Ari Aster, in his feature directorial debut. It stars Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro and Gabriel Byrne.

A24 horror films are sometimes touch and go, I mean, The Witch and It comes at Night were brilliant additions to the genre with deserved praise. HEREDITARY is one of those films that came on the heels of an outrageous ad campaign that promised the most disturbing horror film you've ever seen. As usually turns out to be the case, I assure you that it isn't. I'm still a fan of the style of shock advertising made popular in the 50's and love the way HEREDITARY was able to make it work. The film is disturbing, very reminiscent of Rosemary's Baby, with decent jump scares and mind numbing mental horror, its hardly the film the advertisements and critics are promising but it is different enough when it comes to possession films to make it number 9.

9) 'The Night Eats the World'

The zombie film is my bread and butter. No matter how many different variations on the theme you have, I'll always be up for a new tale of post apocalyptic terror. When I saw the trailer for 'The Night Eats the World', I was sold immediately. It didn't look like there was anything new, but I didn't care. It's almost like we're watching each and every little story play out, as the world they live in is slowly falling down around them. It will never cease to terrify me. The thought of fighting overwhelming odds to a hopeless end is something that keeps me awake at night. I hope that it never comes to fruition, but until then.... I'll use each film that's made as a blueprint for a possible future. This one, was a solid entry into the undead lexicon, that's worth your time.

GHOST STORIES

"Skeptical professor Phillip Goodman embarks on a trip to the terrifying after finding a file with details of three unexplained cases of apparitions."

British horror film written and directed by Andy Nyman and Jeremy Dyson, based on their 2010 stage play of the same name. It stars Nyman reprising his role from the play as a man devoted to debunking fraudulent psychics, and who is tasked with solving three unexplained paranormal events. The film also stars Martin Freeman, Alex Lawther, Paul Whitehouse.

GHOST STORIES is the perfect classic British horror film. It feels like a Hammer film chock full British supernatural images and mind bending story telling. We have the stereotypical skeptic whose forced to face the worst of his fears and Martin Freeman is the perfect antithesis. The English landscape plays just as much of a role in GHOST STORIES to remind us it is the home of all things ghostly.

10) 'Revenge'

I love films where women are empowered. Revenge films are also right in my wheelhouse. The only thing I'm not a fan of, is films with sexual assault. Sadly, it's a large lynch pin that creates the reason for revenge. What's worse is that it's a story that's all too true, but more often then not, there is no justice. That's one of the things these films can offer the viewers, closure or a release. 'Revenge' is a bloody, gut wrenching tale of giving back, ten fold, what they took from her. It's intense and one that's not easy to forget.

BIRD BOX

"Five years after an ominous unseen presence drives most of society to suicide, a mother and her two children make a desperate bid to reach safety."

BIRD BOX is an American post-apocalyptic drama thriller film directed by Susanne Bier from a screenplay written by Eric Heisserer, based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Josh Malerman. The film follows a woman, played by Sandra Bullock, who, along with a pair of children, dubbed Boy and Girl, must make it through a forest and river blindfolded to avoid supernatural entities which cause people who see them to die by suicide. Trevante Rhodes, Jacki Weaver, Rosa Salazar, Danielle Macdonald, Lil Rel Howery, Tom Hollander, BD Wong, Sarah Paulson, Colson Baker, and John Malkovich also star.

I'm a sucker for horror that can expertly use the art of what you don't see is worse what than what you can and BIRD BOX pulls it off better than I have ever seen (or not seen?). It helps that seeing the monsters are truly a personal experience, so even if we did see them they would be our own monsters and not necessarily the ones our survivors are seeing. Thus we are confined to tight shots on the actors or views through their blindfolds, when the monsters are present. The closest we come to knowing what they look like is a series of scribbles by one of them. The title, of course, comes from the birds ability to sense the presence of evil and therefore work as an alarm. In the end we have a very interesting study of human nature combined with an evil that is dangerous when seen. It feels like an attempt to A QUIET PLACE to another level and though I feel it fails in that department it is worthy of this number 11 spot.

Currently available on NETFLIX

In Australia, Netflix originally partnered with four Twitch streamers in performing what they called a Bird Box challenge, in which they would play some popular video games while blindfolded. However, the challenge has since turned into a global Internet meme in which participants wear blindfolds and try to do day-to-day activities. In response, Netflix has released several messages over social media advising people not to undertake the latter challenge due to the dangers that may be caused by doing so.

We are very sad that a warning like this would even need to be issued and ask all our readers to please use some common sense, which we of course know you will.
